Hooked by the Sky

I was going back home when I found two Great Grey Owls (Strix nebulosa) that I stayed with for four ours on my own ! What a privilege ! This is a very large owl, whose wingspan can rich about 150 cm (60 inches), comes to the South every four years. Its range is the worldwide Northern Taïga : from European Scandinavia, Russia and North America. North american Great Grey Owls have a darker plumage than those old continents ones. This owl is not shy at all, it can be approach to a few meters only and can still hunt hearing rodents under the deep snow.

This owl was resting, hunting, resting and hunting again. One moment, I have seen it eating 3 rodents in a short time lapse of ten minutes. You want to know more about the Great Grey Owl technics to hunt :

I had to photograph the owl against the evening light as the wind was coming from the opposite side of the light .

That's what I like with Nature photography, you have to compose with external factors you cannot control and take the most of it !
